3. Arcata City General Plan Process- Get Involved!

I hope this finds you and your loved ones well. We have been engaging with all of you in one form or another in our City policy updates over the course of the last couple of years, and we would now like to extend a specific invite to this group, and students in your classes, to take part in a facilitated dialogue about planned growth and development in the City of Arcata with our professional facilitator, Heather Equinoss, cc’d here.

We are in the middle of a General Plan Update and have targeted questions for the community about how the City should plan to guide and regulate future growth. We know there are many people inside Arcata and in the larger Humboldt region we are not able to reach with our current engagement strategies. The Arcata General Plan is an important document that shapes how the City of Arcata will look, function, provide services, and manage resources for the next 20 years, and we want to make sure we gather feedback from all parts of our community. As part of this General Plan Update, we have created a draft future development vision for a specific area west of Arcata’s downtown, called the Arcata Gateway Area. You can learn more about our current General Plan here and the draft Gateway Area Plan here.

In addition to public workshops, we are connecting with community members in groups of their choosing and at places and times they prefer. We’re referring to these sessions as “We’ll Come to You” listening sessions. We are offering them to any member of the community, group, or organization that would like to gather a small group of people together to provide feedback on the draft Gateway Area Plan, as well as other components of City visioning and plans for the future.

We’re reaching out to you to see if you would like to partner with us in gathering a group of 4-20 students that you are in relationship with and that have opinions they would like to share with us about the Gateway Area Plan and the future growth and development of the City of Arcata.

How these sessions would work:

·               Sessions are 1 hour long

·               They can be held over Zoom, or if your group feels comfortable and would prefer to meet in person at a specific location, we can accommodate that too

·               City staff will be present to share 15 minutes of background information and key components of the draft plan

·               The group assembled will have 45 minutes to provide feedback and/or ask additional questions about the plan

·               A facilitator will be present to support the conversation and take notes on the feedback the group provides

Would you like to gather a group and we’ll come to you? Please respond back to myself and Sergio Beruetta, cc’d here, and he will coordinate with you on a date of your choosing.

We understand this may not be possible during your class sessions, but this could be offered as extra credit to your students to attend a session outside of regular class time. If you would like to have us present to a class you are teaching this semester, let us know that too, and we can discuss presenting specifically to them (Ben and I are already scheming on a session like this later this month).

Here are days and times that we are currently holding for these sessions:

·         2/10: 2pm

·         2/17: 10:30-11:30am

·         3/1: 5:30pm

·         3/11: 8:30am (this one would have to be virtual)

·         3/11: 3 pm

·         3/14: 3:30 pm

And, if none of those days or times are preferable for your group, we are happy to look at other dates/times. Please let us know of some alternate options.

Thank you in advance for all the work you do in our community, and we hope to work with you soon,

How to Apply

Applications for the 2022-2024 Fellowship cycle are now OPEN! Please share with any eligible applicants and networks.

To apply for the RAY Fellowship Program, applicants must:

1. Complete an initial application form—link here. After you submit this initial survey you will be sent subsequent links to complete your application.

2. Create a Google drive folder with your Resume or Curriculum Vitae, using the format you feel best captures the range of your experience and interests.

3. In this Google drive folder include responses to each of the following essay, visioning, and short answer prompts. Please include your name in all materials.

  • Essay: Dr. Roger Arliner Young, for whom our Program is named, was the first Black woman to receive a doctorate degree in zoology. Her accomplishments came after years of juggling research and teaching while navigating social obstacles as a Black woman and overcoming personal struggles. Please tell us about an experience from your own life that has influenced who you are and shaped your development. (500 word limit)
  • Visioning: Imagine the world seven generations from now, when humanity has solved our current environmental crises. What does your vision of this world look like? How is it different from our world today and what might be the same? What are some of the ways you contributed to these solutions, and how did the RAY Fellowship Program help to catalyze your leadership? You may answer this prompt through any medium in which you express yourself best. Examples of submissions could be a painting, a photo diary, a poem or short story, an Instagram post, a Twitter thread, a video essay, a 2 minute podcast, a visual portfolio, etc. There are no right or wrong answers, so be creative in how you show/tell your answer, and have fun!
    • Please submit your answer to this prompt via URL (shareable as a video, audio, or PDF file through Google Drive, Youtube, Vimeo, etc.).
      • For video or audio submissions, please limit to 2 minutes.
      • For non-video/audio or visual submissions, please limit any contextualizing description to 300 words.
      • For text-only submissions, please limit to 400 words.
  • Short Answer: Which RAY Fellowship position(s) are you most interested in and why does your experience and background align well with this work? Provide a short answer of no more than 250 words for each position you are interested in (up to three positions). (250 word limit per each position of interest, up to 3 positions)

What does the RAY Program hope to learn from these prompts? Feel free to allow the following to guide your thinking:

  • Where are you in your journey of learning and leadership? How will the RAY Fellowship support your growth?
  • How are you thinking about the different intersections of social and environmental issues?
  • How do you think about community and how might RAY be an opportunity to build, be in, and give back to your communities?
  • How do principles of diversity, equity, and inclusion relate to your study, work, and leadership?

4. Identify a professor, mentor, employer, community member, elder, etc. to write a Letter of Support for you and provide contact information for the person who is writing the recommendation. Your recommender will receive a link to submit their letter through our online submission form. (If they don't see it in their email inbox, please ask them to check their spam folder.) Letters of Support should not exceed one page, single-spaced. Please refrain from using relatives or personal friends.

Applications must be completed and submitted, as outlined above, no later than Sunday March 27th, 2022. Transcripts and additional writing samples are not required. The RAY Program reviews applications on a rolling basis and will notify applicants of interview decisions no later than late April 2021.

That's all for now! Poem for the stalwart as always, below:

Winter Poem

once a snowflake fell
on my brow and i loved
it so much and i kissed
it and it was happy and called its cousins
and brothers and a web
of snow engulfed me then
i reached to love them all
and i squeezed them and they became
a spring rain and i stood perfectly
still and was a flower
